The WPIAL team track and field semifinal matchups are set, and the four defending champions — the North Allegheny and Riverside boys and the Butler and Shenango girls — now know what they will have to do to get back to the finals.
The other participants now are aware of who they will have to go through if they are to have a crack at WPIAL gold in the finals, set for May 6 at Peters Township.
The WPIAL track and field committee released the matchups Thursday afternoon.
Eight sites will host semifinals Tuesday. The winners from each meet will advance.
The Butler girls squad is the only defending champion traveling for its semifinal. It will compete at Baldwin against Franklin Regional, Latrobe and West Allegheny.
The Golden Tornado have won two straight titles after stopping the Hempfield girls’ streak of five consecutive crowns.
The North Allegheny boys, who had won four straight from 2013-16, regained the title last spring after Seneca Valley broke through in 2017.
The Riverside boys won their second in a row last year and fifth in the history of the program.
Shenango’s girls title was the first in their history.
