High school roundup for March 28, 2019: Bach fans 16 to lead Yough past Albert Gallatin

Jarett Bach entered the season as one of the WPIAL’s top pitchers. On Thursday, he put his arm on display.

The senior Pitt recruit allowed four hits and struck out 16 batters in 6¹⁄₃ innings to lead Yough to a 9-2 nonsection victory over visiting Albert Gallatin (1-1).

Vinny Martin and Dom Koch each knocked in two runs for the Cougars (1-1).

Freedom 7, Quigley Catholic 3 — Noah Henderson struck out five and allowed three hits over four innings and also went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to help Freedom (1-2) win a nonsection game. Zach Rosa was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Alex Tomsic had two hits and two RBIs for Quigley Catholic (0-3).

Mohawk 5, Ambridge 1 — Brett Pitzer was 3 for 4 with an RBI and also earned the win on the mound with nine strikeouts as Mohawk (1-1) won a nonsection game.

North Allegheny 5, Canon-McMillan 2 — Cole Young and Shane Murphy knocked in runs to help North Allegheny (1-2) beat No. 1-ranked Canon-McMillan (2-2) in a nonsection game.

OLSH 10, North Catholic 2 — Peter Fabiano was 3 for 3 with a double and RBI to lead OLSH (3-1) to a nonsection win. Jeff Zick struck out seven and allowed five hits in five innings to earn the win.

Shaler 11, Penn Hills 3 — Zach Hernon had four RBIs, and Hunter Boyan, Tre Junker and Braedon Campbell each knocked in two runs to lead Shaler (2-1) to a nonsection victory.

South Park 5, Chardon, Ohio 0 — Anthony Sharp threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead South Park (2-1) to a win in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Jake Mittleider went 2 for 3 for the Eagles

Coach Steve Bucci became South Park’s all-time leader in victories with 224.

West Allegheny 8, Beaver 5 — Luke Lambert doubled, homered and had two RBIs, and Adam Crawford homered as West Allegheny (2-0) won a nonsection game.

Derry 6, Jeannette 4 — Ryan Bushey was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Zack Karaschak, Donte Klapchar and Tyler Cymmerman also knocked in runs as Derry (1-1) won a nonsection game.

Derrick Miller, Seth Howard, Drake Petrillo and Michael McCabe had RBIs for Jeannette (1-1).

DuBois Central Catholic 9, Greensburg Central Catholic 5 — Dylan Sebek was 4 for 4, and Tom Voelker had two hits, but GCC (1-2) lost a nonsection game.

Greensburg Salem 15, Kiski Area 9 — Winning pitcher Aaren Putt had two RBIs, and Reid Admundson added two hits and three RBIs to guide Greensburg Salem (2-0) to a nonsection win.

Hempfield 5, Pine-Richland 4 — Hunter Eperesi was 3 for 4 to help No. 5 Hempfield (4-0) earn a nonsection victory over No. 2 Pine-Richland.

Tyler Wiederstein allowed three hits and had two strikeouts to earn the win.

Highlands 3, Belle Vernon 0 — Noah Gillette allowed one hit and struck out six over five innings to lead Highlands (2-1) to a nonsection win over Belle Vernon (0-1). Chase Godfrey surrendered only one hit over the last two innings for the save. Zac Kuniac singled twice for Highlands.

Mt. Pleasant 5, McGuffey 3 — Joe Shrum struck out three and threw a complete game as Mt. Pleasant (1-1) won.

Southmoreland 22, Geibel 0 (3 inn.) — Anthony Govern and Michael Klatt combined for six strikeouts for Southmoreland (2-0). Austin McBeth had four RBIs, and Klatt, Mason Basinger and Travis Sipple added two RBIs.

Ligonier Valley 12, United 2 (5 inn.) — Sam Sheeder had two hits and three RBIs, and Clark Harr and John Caldwell each knocked in two runs to lead Ligonier Valley (3-0, 3-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win. Michael Marinchak struck out five batters in two innings.

Kiski Area 7, Plum 6 — Nick Smith pitched four scoreless innings of relief and drove in what proved to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for Kiski Area (1-1) in a nonsection win. Plum (2-3) led 5-0 after three innings, but the Cavaliers plated five in the top of the fourth before getting two runs in the fifth. Ryne Wallace doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Tallon Auth had three hits, including two doubles for the Mustangs.

Freeport 10, Hampton 7 — The Class 3A No. 4 Yellowjackets loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch after a strikeout, a hit batter and a walk, and Joseph Hotalski scored the eventual game-winner from third on a suicide squeeze. Zachary Allen picked up the win in relief for Freeport (3-0) and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Michael Kosko picked up the loss for Class 5A No. 5 Hampton (1-2).

Highlands 3, Belle Vernon 0 — Noah Gillette allowed one hit and struck out six over five shutout innings to lead Highlands (2-1) to a nonsection win over Belle Vernon (0-1). Chase Godfrey surrendered only one hit over the last two innings to earn the save for the Golden Rams. Zac Kuniac singled twice for Highlands, and Matt Sekada drove in a run.

St. Joseph 5, Apollo-Ridge 1 — C.J. Singleton surrendered only one run on two hits and had six strikeouts over five innings to lead St. Joseph (1-1) to a nonsection win at Apollo-Ridge (1-1). Trevor Greenwald and Anthony Kuhns had two hits apiece for the Spartans.

Softball

Canon-McMillan 16, Mt. Lebanon 3 (5 inn.) — Sydney Senay was 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Lindsay Schmidt hit two home runs and had four RBIs as No. 5 Canon-McMillan (3-0, 2-0) won in Section 1-6A. Hailey Freeman doubled, homered and had four RBIs, and Olivia Ulam added a double, home run and two RBIs.

Hampton 5, Shaler 2 — Hannah Bradfield was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs to lead Hampton (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 2-5A win.

Montour 14, Chartiers Valley 7 — Hannah Gallagher was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Angelina LaMarca smacked a two-run double as Montour (2-2, 2-0) won in Section 3-5A.

South Allegheny 13, Steel Valley 9 — Mikala Swearingen and Kennedy Pikula each had three hits to help South Allegheny (8-0, 2-0) win a Section 3-3A game. Brooke Martin and Marissa Hoesch each homered for Steel Valley (0-2, 0-1).

Serra Catholic 17, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Lizzie Fite and Isabella Countryman combined for a no-hitter with nine strikeouts, as No. 5 Serra Catholic (2-0, 2-0) won in Section 2-2A. Nina Grandey was 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs.

Chartiers-Houston 10, Charleroi 0 (5 inn.) — Ella Brookman tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts as No. 1 Chartiers-Houston (4-0, 1-0) won a Section 3-2A game. Bella Hess was 4 for 4, and Karlyn Bayer and Brookman each had two hits.

Freedom 6, Neshannock 5 — Haley Scheck was 3 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs, and Trisha Speicher was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Freedom (3-0, 2-0) won in Section 2-4A.

Laurel 10, Mohawk 0 (5 inn.) — Kayla Ruperto threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts as No. 2 Laurel (3-0, 2-0) beat No. 3 Mohawk (0-2, 0-2) in a Section 4-2A game. Mackenzie Latess was 3 for 3 with four RBIs in the victory.

Franklin Regional 7, Connellsville 6 — In Section 1-5A, winning pitcher Angalee Beall homered, and Katie Alexander had two hits and two RBIs to lead Franklin Regional (3-2, 2-0) to victory.

Latrobe 10, Armstrong 0 (5 inn.) — Jordan Tallman hit two home runs, and Kiley Myers threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead No. 2 Latrobe (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-5A win.

Penn-Trafford 5, Albert Gallatin 4 — Emma Armstrong hit a grand slam to lift Penn-Trafford (2-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-5A win.

West Mifflin 11, Belle Vernon 5 — Losing pitcher Sophia Godzack had two RBIs for Belle Vernon (1-3, 1-1).

Greensburg Salem 4, Derry 1 — Megan Toth was 2 for 3, and Rena Caruso threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts as Greensburg Salem (1-1) won a nonsection game. Gianna Copelli had two hits for Derry (0-2).

Mt. Pleasant 4, Elizabeth Forward 0 — Carolyn Alincic struck out 13 to guide Mt. Pleasant (2-0) to a nonsection win. Haylie Brunson and Autumn Shogan homered. Mary Smithnosky had three hits, and Courtney Poulich had two doubles and two RBIs.

Norwin 3, Yough 2 — Victoria Shimko hit a two-run homer, and Alex Dilner had two singles and an RBI to lift Norwin (2-1) to a nonsection victory. Sophomore Sydney Lokay threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Yough (2-2) scored twice in the seventh.

Ligonier Valley 20, United 0 (4 inn.) — Jane Garver tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and also homered and had three RBIs as Ligonier Valley (3-0, 3-0) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Kaylee Colt hit a grand slam for the Rams.

Highlands 5, Burrell 4 — Bailey Beacom hit a bases-loaded line drive through the gap at first to score Maera Williams from third in the bottom of the seventh as the Golden Rams won a nonsection game.

Williams went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI for Highlands (1-1). Freshman Jaycee Haidze picked up her first varsity win, striking out 10 in a complete game. Maia Ferra went 3 for 3 with one RBI for Burrell (1-1), and Caroline Dyka took the loss.

Riverview 10, Valley 7 — With the game tied at seven, Mikaela Collins hit a three-run walk-off homer to lift Riverview (1-1) to a nonsection win. Raiders pitcher Alyssa Cappa struck out 17 batters on the way to the win, and she also went 2 for 3 with one RBI. Aliva Schultheis added two hits and two RBIs for Riverview. Auveonna Perkins took the loss for Valley (0-2). She had two hits and an RBI.

Springdale 5, Bishop Canevin 3 — Alexis Hrivnak pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts and went 3 for 4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBIs for Springdale (2-0) in a nonsection win over Bishop Canevin (0-1). Brianna Thompson had three hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Emily Wilhelm singled twice for the Dynamos. Bella DeMark doubled twice for Bishop Canevin.

Plum 19, Mars 5 (5 inn.) — Chloe Fabio and Alyssa Schofield had three hits and a pair of RBIs to help Plum (2-0, 2-0) cruise to a Section 2-5A win over Mars (1-1, 1-1). Abby Froehlich homered for the Mustangs, who scored 11 runs in the fourth inning. Gabrielle Fischetti singled, doubled and drove in a run, while Jillian Durst singled twice and recorded two RBIs.

Vincentian Academy 7, Apollo-Ridge 4 — Mollie Charlton had two hits, including a triple, but Apollo-Ridge (1-1, 1-1) fell short against Vincentian Academy (2-0, 2-0) in a Section 2-2A game. Elizabeth Arnold pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts for the Royals, who scored five times in the fourth inning. Arnold also had a triple. Emma Rametta doubled for the Vikings.
