Mid Mon Valley Hall of Fame announces Class of 2019

Monessen grad Charel Allen and Belle Vernon grad Marlon McIntyre headline the 2019 Mid Mon Valley Hall of Fame Class of 2019, which was announced Friday.

Allen, a 2004 graduate of Monessen, scored 3,110 points and led the Greyhounds to a state championship. She was the Class A Player of the Year.

At Notre Dame, she finished eighth on the school’s all-time scoring list. She played professional for nine seasons in the WNBA for the Sacramento Monarchs. She now is an assistant women’s basketball coach at California Fullerton.

After graduating from Belle Vernon in 1981, McIntyre played at Pitt and for the Los Angeles Rams. McIntyre played football and basketball for the Leopards, but it was in football where he excelled, helping his team to Big 10 Conference titles.

The rest of the Class of 2019 is comprised of Mon Valley Catholic’s Ron Bertovich, Charleroi’s Lew Rawls, Elizabeth Forward’s Lenny Smith, Ringgold’s Rod Fedorchak, and the deceased Patsy DeBerardinis of Mon Valley Catholic.

The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 26th annual banquet at The Georgetown Centre in Pleasant Hills at 5:30 p.m. June 21.

General chairman of the Sports Hall of Fame, Steve Russell, called the selections “a representative class with a cross section of Mon Valley athletes who have honored their communities with their dedication to sports.”

Ron Bertovich was a 1972 graduate of Mon Valley Catholic High School and after graduating from St. Francis (Pa.) he was a sports information director and executive for college and professional teams.

Rod Fedorchak graduated from Monongahela High School in 1966 where in both his junior and senior years in football was named All-Big 6 Conference, All-WPIAL and all-state. He played football at Pitt.

Lew Rawls was a star running back at Charleroi High School and a 1968 graduate. As a junior he won the Big 9 scoring title, and in his scholastic career was named to the Mon Valley All-Star team two times.

Lenny Smith was a 1967 graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He led the Warriors to the Big 9 Conference title with an 8-0-1 record. He received a football scholarship to Virginia Tech where he had 13 interceptions.

Patsy DeBerardinis was a 1968 Mon Valley Catholic graduate, and is the lone 1,000-point scorer in the school’s history.
