Wrestler of the week: Costa Moore, Canon-McMillan, so.
The Big Macs’ sophomore had a strong performance over three days of the PIAA Class AAA tournament, helping his team reach the semifinals in the consolation bracket.
Moore won all five of his bouts while wrestling at 113 and 120 pounds. His 6-1 decision over Dallastown’s Adam Karlie in the final bout of the teams’ consolation bracket showdown lifted Canon-McMillan to a dramatic 31-30 win. He also had a sudden-victory decision over Spring-Ford’s Shane Reynolds in the consolation quarterfinals.
Honorable mention
Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, Seneca Valley, so.: The defending state champion continues to roll along, winning all three of his clashes at the PIAA tournament. That included two wins by technical fall. Herrera-Rondon has just one loss this season.
Austin Mele, Burrell, sr.: Wrestling at the Giant Center by now is a familiar feeling for Burrell, as Mele proved by winning all five of his bouts in the PIAA Class AA team tournament. He had two major decisions as Burrell advanced to the consolation semifinals.
Bryson Miller, Freedom, sr.: Freedom went two-and-out at the PIAA Class AA tournament, but Miller had a strong performance anyway. A returning state medalist, Miller won both of his matches at the PIAA team tournament, including one by pin.
Darren Miller, Kiski Area, sr.: Miller is approaching Kiski Area history, and he’ll get there with some more performances like he had at the PIAA tournament. Miller, a Bucknell recruit, went perfect in five matches, including a pair of pins and a pair of technical falls, to help Kiski Area earn third place in the state. Miller is within five wins of tying the school record for career victories.
Gerrit Nijenhuis, Canon-McMillan, jr.: A two-time PIAA medalist, Nijenhuis feels at home in Hershey, and he won all five of his matches at the PIAA Class AAA team tournament to help the Big Macs reach the consolation semifinals. Nijenhuis had three pins and beat Kiski Area’s Nick Delp by major decision during the run.
