The Quaker Valley boys basketball team tasted defeat Friday for the first time this season.

It came by the slimmest of margins, 70-69 at the hands of Blackhawk in Section 2-4A play.

Despite the setback, the Quakers (10-1, 4-1) remained at No. 1 in the Trib HSSN WPIAL 4A rankings. They now will try to establish a new winning streak as they host section foe Ambridge on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Ambridge has won four in a row overall, including the last three in section play. The Bridgers (9-4, 4-0) defeated Blackhawk in their most recent game Jan. 8.

Panthers hope to keep streak going

The Sewickley Academy boys basketball team owns a three-game winning streak, with all three coming in Section 3-2A games since a loss to WPIAL 3A No. 2 Aliquippa on Jan. 2.

The Panthers, 7-3 overall and 5-0 in section play, are the top-ranked team in WPIAL 2A. They close out the first half of the section slate Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Sewickley Academy beat its three most recent section foes – South Side, Burgettstown and Laurel – by an average of 31 points.

QV swim teams set for meet with Blackhawk

The Quaker Valley boys and girls swim teams picked up this month where they left off in December by recording several personal bests and WPIAL qualifying times.

The teams achieved four WPIAL cuts in last Thursday’s meet against Riverside and posted seven WPIAL qualifying marks against Montour on Jan. 3.

QV returns to action against Blackhawk on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Blackhawk High School. The Quakers return home to face Mars on Jan. 24.
