The Sewickley Academy boys basketball team puts its four-game win streak on the line Wednesday evening when it visits Aliquippa for a nonsection game at 7:30.
The Panthers, who stand at 4-2 after an 0-2 start, return to action after a 12-day break from competition. They last played Dec. 20 and defeated Section 3-2A foe Shenango to move to 2-0 in the section standings.
Aliquippa is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Section 1 of 3A. The team lost a close 84-80 decision to 6A Butler at the C.J. Betters Tournament last week and bounced back with a 78-51 rout of Montour.
QV wrestlers hope to remain undefeated in section
After a busy month of December which included last week’s Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan, the Quaker Valley wrestling team returns to action Wednesday against Class AA, Section 2B foe South Side.
The Quakers are 2-0 in their subsection after a 57-18 win over Carlynton and a 39-32 triumph over Hopewell.
QV had one medalist at Powerade as Conner Redinger placed sixth at 132 pounds. He fell to Latrobe’s Gabe Willochell by fall in the fifth-place finals.
He went 4-3 over the two-day tournament with two decisions and two pinfall victories to his credit.
Quakers girls basketball team has momentum
The Quaker Valley girls basketball team hopes to build on its St. Joseph Tournament victory as it resumes Section 2-4A play Thursday at Hopewell.
The Quakers finished December with three straight wins to improve to 5-3 overall. They take a 1-1 section record into the matchup with the Vikings.
QV defeated Deer Lakes and Riverview last week to claim the tournament title. The win over Deer Lakes, a 48-45 result, avenged a 47-25 setback to the Lancers in the final of the season-opening Deer Lakes tournament.
