Sewickley Academy hockey rebounds from shutout loss

The Sewickley Academy hockey team got back on track Monday with its 7-5 win over Deer Lakes in a PIHL Class A game at Robert Morris University’s Colonials Arena on Neville Island.

The Panthers, now 6-5 overall and tied for fourth place in the North Division, bounced back from a 10-0 loss to West Allegheny on Dec. 10.

Andrew Beck broke a 2-2 tie with a goal early in the third period, and Sewickley Academy led the rest of the way, scoring four straight goals overall to take control.

Matthew Hajdukiewicz led Sewickley Academy with four goals, and he has 24 goals through 11 games played.

QV hockey comes close to win

The Quaker Valley hockey team scored a season-high seven goals Monday against Franklin Regional in a PIHL Varsity AA game at the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale, but the Panthers came out on top 8-7.

The Quakers fell to 2-9-0-1 with the close setback.

QV led 3-1 early in the second period, and the game was tied 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 before FR grabbed an 8-5 lead with a little more than five minutes left in the third period.

Kevin Guerrieri tallied a hat trick and added an assist, and Daniel Fagan scored a goal and provided three helpers to lead the Quakers.

QV boys basketball begins section play

The Quaker Valley boys basketball team hopes to stay undefeated as it visits Beaver Area on Tuesday to open Section 2-4A play.

The Quakers, the only team in the section not to have already played a section game, rolled through its first four games, all victories, winning each with an average of 61.8 points scored.

QV also limited its opponents to a 42.5 per-game average.

Beaver Area has struggled out of the gate at 0-4 overall. The Bobcats are 0-1 in section after a 53-46 loss to Ambridge on Friday.
