Norwin soccer standout Carter Breen is far from a late bloomer. In fact, he often is ahead of everyone else on the field.
He has been one to watch for years, at the youth level through the high school ranks. And while his college commitment came later than most, the senior is pleased with his decision.
So is the school that landed him.
Breen announced Wednesday he will attend Duquesne.
“I loved the atmosphere at Duquesne,” Breen said. “Everyone seemed so happy for me to be there, and that’s what made my final decision easy.”
Duquesne began recruiting Breen heavily in the WPIAL playoffs. He also had interest from Division II and III schools.
The high-speed forward will graduate as Norwin’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 68. He was the WPIAL Class 4A co-Player of the Year, the Tribune-Review Westmoreland Player of the Year and also garnered All-WPIAL and all-state honors.
This season, he scored 36 goals and had 16 assists as the Knights reached the WPIAL championship game for the first time in 29 years.
Norwin had not won a playoff game since 2010.
He will join another local standout from the Class of 2019 in Belle Vernon senior forward Markello Apodiakos, another Duquesne commit.
Breen also was the kicker for Norwin’s football team.
