Three champions were crowned at the 2017 WPIAL Competitive Spirit Championship on Saturday, as Bishop Canevin in Class A, Elizabeth Forward in AA, and Shaler in AAA took home gold. Hopewell and North Allegheny, both of which claimed first last year, finished as runners-up in AA and AAA, respectively, this year, while there was no runner up in A, as Bishop Canevin was the only squad to compete. In it’s fifth year, the event continued to grow in prominence, as the spacious gymnasium at Hempfield Area High School was packed to the brim with spectators and nearly 30 teams.
While the Crusaders, Warriors and Titans won their respective classifications based on female enrollment, the 16 teams that qualified for the PIAA Championship were determined by squad size. In the small varsity (5-15 members), Hampton took first, followed by fellow qualifiers Pine-Richland, Bethel Park and Butler.
In the medium varsity (15-20 members), Shaler prevailed, followed by North Allegheny, Elizabeth Forward, Hopewell, Thomas Jefferson, Penn-Trafford, Seneca Valley and North Hills, all of which moved on to the state finals.
Baldwin prevailed in the large varsity, which was squads comprised of 20-30 members. Also, three at-large bids allowed Norwin (large varsity), South Park (large varsity) and South Fayette (small varsity) to also advance to the PIAA championship, to be held in Hershey on Jan. 20-21.
Performances were scored by a panel of judges, and the 100-point total was comprised of a cheer portion and a music portion. A strict time limit of 2:30 was enforced.
